Rushmore's patriotic firework display fizzles

Posted: Jan 13, 2010 2:40 PM PST

Blame the mountain pine beetle for this year's Mount Rushmore Fourth of July celebration having a little less bang.

Acting memorial superintendent John Scott says that the fireworks display will not go off because of the risk of fire.  In a release Wednesday, Scott said "Due to the beetle epidemic affecting forests surrounding the park, the wildfire hazard during the 2010 summer tourist season will be high to very high."

More than 330,000 acres of the Black Hills National Forest have been affected by beetle infestations.

About 20,000 to 30,000 people attend the annual celebration at Mount Rushmore.  Last year, the fireworks display went off but a heavy fog kept most people from seeing it.  And there have been years where the fireworks almost didn't go off because of concern about the fire danger.

Yes, you read correctly, no 2010 July 4th Fireworks at Mt Rushmore!
